Newspapers In Education
NIE – it stands for Newspapers In Education and it’s a team effort!  The team members are The Pioneer Group, local business owners, vacationing subscribers, and our children’s teachers.

 - Promoting Literacy!
 - Motivating Students!
 - Helping Educators!
 - Commitment to Community!

The Pioneer is committed to covering half the cost of the NIE program. The other half comes from subscribers who put their paper on Vacation NIE Stop when they go away for a short period, and your donations.

The donations are put into an NIE fund. When school starts local teachers contact the Pioneer to request papers for their classrooms. When the funds are available we send the papers to them at NO CHARGE! There aren’t many teaching tools or textbooks that come with that price tag attached these days.

Why participate in NIE?
Because together we can deliver the world to our students!

When students open the newspaper, they begin a lifelong habit of reading, learning and becoming involved with their city, their country and their world.  History, culture and current events – that are just hours old – become alive and real for them. The newspaper is a living textbook!

Recent studies indicate that children who read the newspaper on a regular basis in the classroom score higher on standardized tests, better comprehend what they read, and write better than students who never see a newspaper.

Newspapers motivate students to learn by making classroom subjects relevant to them.  It’s easier to understand math by calculating your favorite sports team’s scores instead of using standard textbook questions.  Geography and history mean more when you read about what happened in that country yesterday, as well as years ago.
